Lantern Ceremony

On Memorial Day, they had the 10th Annual Lantern Floating Hawaii Ceremony, at Ala Moana Park in Honolulu. Lanterns were placed in the water in memory of passed loved ones. This tradition originated in Japan. Was a beautiful experience. And by the way, these pictures are not mine, but our friend John. (better than mine!)

Promotion!

Jon will be promoted to Lieutenant Colonel! Yea! The general in his unit brought him this lei and the good news. Such a nice lei!!

Sunset

Sunday we drove to Waimea Bay in the evening to watch the sunset. It was a beautiful evening!

Cinco de Mayo & Boy Day

I actually celebrated Cinco de Mayo today by meeting with a group of women for dinner. (at Chili's - only in Hawaii) Learned that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more in the US than in Mexico . . . . . Today is also Boy Day, for those of Japanese descent. As you drive around, people have put up fish kites, for each son. Last night before the concert, we went to the Japanese store at the mall and they had all their Boy Day merchandise out. They were selling the fish kites, t-shirts and some very expensive boy dolls in cases. There is Girl's Day in March, but don't know what they do to celebrate.

Sergio Mendes at the Shell

Sunday night we went to the first night of the Romance Festival Week. This one was held at the Waikiki Shell. We'd been there once before and it was just delightful. Last night performing were some local artists, which we enjoyed very much. The final performer was the reason we went, to see Sergio Mendes! Those of you who were around in 1966, will remember Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66. They were great! Never thought I'd be seeing a live performance by Sergio, it was pretty cool!
